BMW Deploys Truck With Hydrogen Combustion Engine in Logistics

The BMW Group is actively evaluating sustainable transport solutions through real-world testing of an 18-ton truck powered by a hydrogen combustion engine at Plant Leipzig in Germany.

Utilizing a refined piston engine based on proven diesel technology, this advanced vehicle burns hydrogen to generate water vapor with virtually zero carbon dioxide emissions. The ongoing pilot program supports the Technology Exterior Components (TEK) division by transporting essential materials for plastic components, such as bumpers and spoilers, and a subsequent phase is planned to supply completed assemblies directly to production lines. Evaluation involves both long-haul transit and short local trips around the facility to determine optimal logistics applications. Because the system leverages familiar diesel engineering principles, integration into existing maintenance frameworks is streamlined, delivering performance comparable to traditional diesel models while enabling rapid refueling.

Although hydrogen-powered consumer vehicles remain a few years away from widespread commercial availability, BMW of Springfield features an exceptional lineup of premium vehicles. We welcome you to reach out to our dealership or visit us in person to arrange a test drive today.
