There is a lot that goes into training for the Olympics and to make sure USA Swimming was ready to compete at this year’s Games in Rio de Janeiro, BMW stepped in to lend their support.
As USA Swimming worked on their craft for the 2016 Olympics in Rio, they utilized BMW’s autonomous technology to separate themselves from the competition. The team’s most popular athletes, including Michael Phelps, were able to improve their technique with some help from the advanced technology, increasing their odds of taking home the gold in Rio.
The tech used to assist swimmers was developed from the LED lights used on BMW autonomous cars. During training, each swimmer attached a sets of LEDs to certain areas of their body, including wrists, hips, shoulder and ankles. An underwater motion-tracking camera was then used to pick up the movements, giving the athletes an accurate depiction of their technique and areas in need of improvement.
Since 2012, Team USA Swimming has been using similar autonomous tech from BMW to gets themselves prepared for competition. And, if you’ve been watching the Olympic Games in Rio this year, then you know the tech seems to have done its job. Go Team USA!
