BMW has announced plans to release an autonomous car on the road by 2021, and they’ve nabbed tech companies Intel and Mobileye to help them with the project. The group will be utilizing an open platform to develop the new model, which will be available for use by other manufacturers.

Although BMW will be receiving assistance from Intel and Mobileye, the brand is no stranger to developing autonomous technology. In fact, BMW has been creating autonomous tech for the past 10 years. It’s been a long time coming, but the company believes the technology will be ready in five years and even has hopes that it will eventually have drop-off, pick-up and self-parking capabilities without anyone needing to be in the vehicle.

To get their autonomous technology ready for the road, BMW is currently running tests using both real-world and digital simulations. The brand is also hoping that by using an open platform they will be able to create an archetype that will be used to make laws and standards for autonomous technology, leading to a safer future.
