The days of gasoline-fueled BMW models may be over due to stricter European Union regulations regarding carbon emissions. Forced to abide by the rules which call for a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions, BMW has announced that they will be converting their entire lineup into electric models within a 10-year timespan.

According to NASDAQ, BMW's existing model lineup will be completely converted to electric drivetrains, plug-in hybrids and range-extending engines. The automaker's 3 Series sport sedans are already expected to reemerge as plug-in hybrids; however, no news has been revealed about other models in the roster. During the conversion, BMW also plans to reduce the weight of all their models in order to make room for battery packs and increase aerodynamics across the lineup.

With the recent launch of their i series, which includes the i3 electric car and i8 sports car, BMW has already proven that they can create successful eco-friendly models. In 2014 alone, the brand sold 17,793 i3 models across the globe. The all-electric model was also the fourth best-selling EV in the U.S. during 2014, beating out other popular selections on the market.

As of now, it's unknown as to whether or not BMW fans will still be able to get a hold of gasoline models when the all-electric conversion is complete, but in the meantime you can find gas models on sale now at Reliable BMW.
