Sources in the automotive industry suggest BMW is currently in the process of developing a dual-clutch transmission that may find its way in their brand-new lineup of front-wheel drive models. The introduction of this transmission could help broaden BMW's customer base and put them in direct competition with other high-end brands already utilizing dual-clutch transmissions.

As of now, BMW does not have many options when it comes to self-shifting transmissions. The BMW X1, which is a front-wheel drive model, comes with an Aisin-source eight-speed automatic transmission, but other than that, the brand doesn't have any other selections for car buyers. If rumors about the arrival of a dual-clutch transmission are true, this could greatly benefit the BMW X1 in the future. With a dual-clutch transmission supporting its engine, the model could produce sportier performance that many X1 enthusiasts would love to take advantage of.

Aside from the BMW X1 model, we're not exactly sure what other front-wheel drive cars would could come equipped with a dual-clutch transmission. There are a wide range of possibilities when it comes to utilizing a DCT, but before we start speculating, we need to wait for an official statement from BMW about the potential transmission.
