Manual fans beware. You may find this news tragic. It has recently come to our attention that the future of manual gearboxes in brand-new BMW models may be a dim one. The company's M division head honcho Frank van Meel recently revealed the German carmaker could begin to shy away from manual models down the line and shift to automatics. If this plan is carried out, this could lead to sad days for stick shift fans across the world.

Due to ongoing developments in technology auto boxes have become faster and incredibly more fuel efficient than manual gearboxes, which has led BMW to consider phasing them out of their lineup. As of now, no solid plans have been made to carry out the proposal, but if it is approved, it does not mean manual models will be completely laid to rest. As long as there is a fanbase for manuals, BMW will continue to offer a manual option to satisfy buyers. However, the option may not be widely available across the roster as it is today.

In addition to revealing the manual gearbox news, Meel also noted the company has set a 600 horsepower limit on future M models. This means the BMW M5, which currently produces around 560 horsepower, is only 40 horsepower shy of the max output.
