Hydrogen-powered cars are on the rise in the automotive industry, with Volkswagen and Toyota in the process of developing their own. As of now, one of the only ones offered on the market is the Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell, which is currently available exclusively in California. However, it's now being said that BMW may be jumping on the bandwagon with their upcoming i5 model. The company's partnership with Toyota could lead to use of the brand's fuel cell system equipped on the Toyota FCV model.
When BMW first announced their joint venture with Toyota in 2012, it was revealed that the two companies would not only be working together to lower the cost of development, but to collaborate on introducing innovative drivetrains. With this being said, it's easy to see why BMW would consider using Toyota's fuel cell system to power their i5. A hydrogen-fueled model would also sit nicely next to the electric-based BMW i3 and petrol-electric hybrid i8. It would give buyers another drivetrain to choose from and provide competition for Mercedes, who plans on releasing a hydrogen-powered B-Class.
We're still waiting on official word from BMW about the possible hydrogen i model, but if you'd like to check out other i models, such as the BMW i3, visit Reliable BMWtoday.
